How to price services: 5 methods (hourly, value, scope)

Five proven pricing methods for creative professionals: hourly, value-based, scope, retainer and project-based. Practical guide with examples.

There is no single right way to price creative services, but there are methods that consistently outperform guesswork. Here are five approaches used by successful freelancers and studios, with the tradeoffs of each.

1. Hourly rate

Simple and transparent. Works well early in your career when you are still estimating how long projects take. The downside: clients pay for time, not outcomes, which creates friction over every logged hour.

Hourly rate = (Monthly costs + Desired income + Taxes) / Billable hours per month

2. Value-based pricing

You price based on what the result is worth to the client, not what it costs you to deliver. High ceiling, but requires strong positioning and a deep understanding of your client's business goals.

3. Scope-based (fixed) pricing

A fixed price for a defined set of deliverables. Predictable for both sides. Requires a solid change-request process to protect your margins when scope grows.

4. Retainer

A recurring monthly fee for ongoing availability or output. Ideal for clients who need consistent creative support. Provides revenue predictability, one of the biggest financial wins for a freelance business.

5. Project-based pricing

Similar to scope-based but defined around the project outcome rather than a deliverable list. Common in branding, campaigns and product launches where the goal is clear but the path evolves.

Comparison table

MethodBest forMain risk
HourlyEarly career, uncertain scopeClient micromanagement
Value-basedExperienced freelancers, strategic workHard to justify without track record
Scope-basedWell-defined deliverablesScope creep without a change process
RetainerOngoing clients, recurring revenueUnclear monthly scope
Project-basedLaunches, campaignsEvolving briefs that expand cost

Which method should you start with?

If you are just starting out, use hourly to build data on how long projects take. Once you have 5 to 10 projects under your belt, move toward scope-based or value-based pricing for higher-margin work.
